HighEdWeb is pleased to share that our 2013 annual conference in Buffalo, NY on October 6-9 will feature two outstanding keynote presentations. Our previously-announced keynote, Scott Stratten (@unmarketing), will join us on Wednesday, October 9 to talk about engagement and share words of inspiration as we close what we know will be another outstanding conference.

And now we’re very excited to announce that HighEdWeb 2013 welcomes Steve Wozniak, author, speaker, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc. and chief scientist at Fusion-io, as our conference opening keynote presenter!

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc. and chief scientist at Fusion-io

A Silicon Valley icon and philanthropist for more than thirty years, Steve Wozniak has helped shape the computing industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products the Apple I and II and influenced the popular Macintosh. In 1976, Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer Inc. with Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. The following year, he introduced his Apple II personal computer, featuring a central processing unit, a keyboard, color graphics, and a floppy disk drive. The Apple II was integral in launching the personal computer industry.

In 1981, he went back to UC Berkeley and finished his degree in electrical engineering/computer science. For his achievements at Apple, Wozniak was awarded the National Medal of Technology by the President of the United States in 1985, the highest honor bestowed on America’s leading innovators.

In 2000, he was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame and was awarded the prestigious Heinz Award for Technology, The Economy and Employment for single-handedly designing the first personal computer and for then redirecting his lifelong passion for mathematics and electronics toward lighting the fires of excitement for education in grade school students and their teachers.

Through the years, Wozniak has been involved in various business and philanthropic ventures, focusing primarily on computer capabilities in schools and stressing hands-on learning and encouraging creativity for students. Making significant investments of both his time and resources in education, he adopted the Los Gatos School District, providing students and teachers with hands-on teaching and donations of state-of-the-art technology equipment. He founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and was the founding sponsor of the Tech Museum, Silicon Valley Ballet and Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.

Wozniak currently serves as Chief Scientist for Fusion-io and is a published author with the release of his New York Times best-selling autobiography, iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon, in September 2006 by Norton Publishing. His television appearances include reality shows Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and The Big Bang Theory.

Register today to join us in Buffalo on October 6-9 and hear Woz and @unmarketing share their insights with #heweb13!

Designed to broaden perspectives and advance the leadership abilities of Web professionals working in higher education, this intense program offers interactive learning experiences in a small group setting.

The skill set needed to be effective in a broader role within the Web field

How to differentiate leading from managing from actually doing the work, so that you can be more intentional in the behavior you select

The Web governance framework, from a comprehensive Web strategy to development of policies, standards and an effective evaluation process

Different Web team options, including how to work in a matrix environment and affect change

The business of higher education

When is the academy?

The academy is being held in conjunction with the annual 2013 HighEdWeb Conference in Buffalo, New York. The Leadership Academy includes two sessions before the conference:

Saturday Oct. 5, 2013, 1-4:30 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

How do I register?

Academy registration is handled separately from conference registration. The cost is $400 and includes dinner on Saturday, Oct. 5, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday, Oct. 6. Space is limited to 32.

Register now >>

What do past attendees have to say about the academy?

“There was a good mix of leading/managing a team and working with other leaders at the university.”

“Overall fantastic and something that needs to be addressed and talked about.”

“Loved the chance to network with peers and discuss things in depth. All in all, made me think about things that I otherwise would not have thought about.”

“Wonderful session. I like the focus on both us as individuals and our functions and responsibilities.”

That’s right, #heweb13 has TWO keynotes: one to be held early on in the conference, and one to send us off with final words of inspiration as we wrap up a great conference experience the morning of Weds. Oct. 9. And we’re thrilled to announce that our 2013 Closing Keynote speaker is none other than author, speaker, and preacher of engagement Scott Stratten — @UnMarketing himself! Join us in welcoming Scott as we keep moving down the road to Buffalo and HighEdWeb 2013.

He now has over 140,000 people follow his daily rantings on Twitter and was just named one of the top 5 social media influencers in the world on Forbes.com. It’s the only time he’s felt comfortable being compared to Ashton Kutcher, P Diddy and Justin Bieber.

His book “UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging” became a national best-seller before it was released and was also named one of the top business books of the year by 1-800-CEO READ and a top 10 book by Under30CEO.com.

His new book entitled “The Book Of Business Awesome: How Engaging Your Customers and Employees Can Make Your Business Thrive” is also a best-seller, breaking the rules of how companies are truly marketed and grown through the current online/offline world.

His passion comes out most when speaking on stage, preaching engagement and becoming one of the most sought-out speakers on the subject.

It’s intense. It’s rewarding. It’s hosting a 2014 HighEdWeb Regional Conference. And we want you to find out how great it is firsthand:

Submit a proposal by April 30 to host a Spring 2014 regional conference in your area. The 2014 regional conference schedule will be announced at the HighEdweb annual conference this October.

“Planning a regional event, while work-intensive, gives both planning committee members and conference attendees an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact on our community and the field of higher education,” said Steve Lewis, Higher Education Web Professionals Association board member. Regional conference committee members also gain the opportunity to network with peers and interact with presenters, to present ideas to the larger community, and to engage in quality professional development at a reasonable cost.

A limited number of regional conferences will be approved. The location and number of each will be based on the strategic goals established by the governing board of HighEdWeb, and will be decided by factors including:

Location in relation to other proposed regionals.

Location in relation to the 2014 annual conference in Portland, OR.

Proposed committee and staffing.

Regional institutions and host facility.

Success of past conferences in the area, if applicable.

Please note that all potential regional conference hosts must submit a proposal each year, regardless of past history or experience of hosting a HighEdWeb conference. As well, if there are multiple applications from a given geographic region, only one will be approved and other applicants will be encouraged to work with the approved regional committee.

Submit your 2014 regional conference proposal via our online application, see our website for more information, or contact Tonya Oaks Smith, HighEdWeb regionals conference chairperson, at tosmith@ualr.edu or @marleysmom.

Mr. Savage will join us in Milwaukee at HighEdWeb 2012 for a candid discussion about trying new things, innovation, success, failure and all things in-between.

Adam Savage was born in New York City in the summer of 1967. The child of a psychotherapist and a filmmaker/painter, raised north of the city in Sleepy Hollow, he showed an early penchant for science classes, art classes, the drama club, and elaborate school pranks–though not necessarily attended to in that order. His young adult years took him back in New York City, working variously as a projectionist, photo developer, graphic designer, assistant animator, set designer, gallery owner, actor, sculptor, and prop-maker.

In the summer of 1990, he turned west to San Francisco and fell into its thriving theater scene, working for dozens of companies as a set designer, prop maker, art director, scenic painter, rigger, master carpenter and producer. In Northern California’s hub of the machine art community Adam’s skill arsenal grew — he welded, fooled with pneumatics, hydraulics, electronics, and picked up some rudimentary machining techniques at Amorphic Robot Works, building robotic animals, music-playing robots, climbing robots — even a robotic opera.

During these years he was also sculpting and exhibiting his sculpture in 50-plus solo and group shows around the country. This quirky mix of artistic, theater-design and mechanical skills left Adam with a reputation for solving difficult mechanical set problems for theaters. And that eventually caught the eye of the special effects industry. Starting in commercials, he built and rigged props and set pieces for over 150 commercials, with clients as diverse as Sega, Coca-Cola, Nike, Burger King and Chevrolet. He built the props for and art-directed a Coca-Cola commercial which was then nominated for a Clio award.

He left special effects for 18 months to head R&D for a small startup toy company, ZOOB–creators of ZOOB, the building toy. There he oversaw product development, merchandising and package design, as well as trade-show design and implementation. From the toy world he moved again toward special effects– this time to George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic, where we worked on Star Wars, Episodes 1 and 2, Galaxy Quest, Space Cowboys, A.I., Terminator 3, The Mummy, and over a dozen commercials. Between stints at ILM he worked in the prop department for Disney on Bicentennial Man, and as a model-shop supervisor on the two Matrix sequels. During this time he also taught Advanced Model-making and Problem Solving for five semesters at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

In the spring of 2002, his old boss Jamie Hyneman called Adam to ask if he’d like to participate in a demo reel for a TV pilot– a new show for the Discovery Channel called Mythbusters. The show aired in January of 2003 with Adam and Jamie as its hosts. It was picked up by Discovery three weeks later. Eight years later, it remains one of the network’s highest rated shows. Mythbusters’ 160-and-counting episode hours have tackled over 750 myths and performed nearly 2,500 experiments. Adam and Jamie travel the country to corporate events, museums, and colleges, for groups as small as 20 and as large as 20,000, telling tales of experiments, explosions and hijinks.

Adam has multiple hobbies and is passionate about restoring his vintage four-wheel drive vehicle, and researching and accruing new pieces for his movie prop collection. But his true love is his family. He lives with his wife, twin boys, and their two amazing dogs.
